9/4/17

Time to cross the border.  I slip out of the trees and ride the border road for the crossing.  Another empty crossing so I ride into Poland.  There are signs showing the forest is off limits so I am glad I camped on the Lithuanian side.  Little ride 20k and I come to a town with a bank and so I have the local currency.  I ride on to a monastery out on a finger into a large lake.  It is big but not that interesting.  In Suwalki I go for a hostel to try to dry off.

9/3/17

A rest day.  As I am hidden deep in woods along the Lithuanian/Polish border I stay in the quiet place as the rain comes down. I write and I sleep.  It is a good day.

9/2/17

They like there towers to watch with.
I back to Druskininkai on the nice paved forest path.  I resupply as I dont have Polish currency.  I head for the border.  Rain is off and on through the day.  The carved wood statues are once again along my ride.  When I get there I decide to camp as I have not seen any homes for a couple of kilometers and the forest is thick and easy to get lost in. I take the nice border dirt road a little ways and then head into the dark forest.  Something big dug a big tunnel under some trees.  I avoid camping next to that.  Maybe some of the wolfs will come visiting.

9/1/17

Cloudy sky has me slow my start.  I ride to  Druskininkai through forest.  I stop at one church.  Rain starts at I reach town.  I pick up a new USB extension cable as the old one is failing.  Newest earbuds wiring is failing so I replace them also.  Hide from the rain in the library.  I head out in the evening to a sculpture park that is a collection of soviet images.  Strolling past the guard tower and barbed wire I decide I dome need to pay for the privilege to stand next to a giant Lenin statue.  Free camping is near by a lake

8/31/17

Back on the road I find the road going to dirt.  When I hit pavement again it is nice.  Then the route ends up on a two track road.  Bike goes down once in a sand trap.  More dogs chasing me.  When I finally hit pavement again I stay on it even when the route turns on a graded dirt road.  At Merkine I camp just across the river at a free site.  With the headwind and sand my arm and knees are beat.  Sleep comes easy.
